Lights twinkle everywhere you go this time of year and there is something in the atmosphere that is just different, special. When you take a moment away from gift wrapping, house cleaning and packing you can feel it. ESA members across the United States are taking that special feeling and spreading it through volunteerism in their communities.
With temperatures plunging well below what the lower 48 is used to, the Alpha Theta chapter of Juneau, Alaska is warming hearts with pictures taken with Santa. The members of Alpha Theta have been taking photos of families with Santa and the Easter Bunny at local shopping malls for more than 15 years. Member, Margi Maki, said her favorite part is watching the girls and boys grow up in the families that come back each year. This event has raised nearly $4,000 in year past for charities such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
, The Salvation Army
, and a local backpacks for hungry kids program.
Much further south, the members of the Gamma Zeta chapter of Edmond, Oklahoma where busy spreading cheer while caroling at Bradford Village Nursing Home. These carolers weren’t finished when their Christmas songs were over. The members of Gamma Zeta also took a turn playing Santa and brought a bag full of presents to give to the residents.
Collegiate members of the Theta Kappa chapter at Rogers State University
in Kansas devoted time during a very busy finals week to quite literally keep their community warm. The students partnered with the Student Government Association to collect hundreds of coats and hoodies to be donated to several charities in their community and surrounding areas.
This time of year we might find ourselves stretched thin, overindulging and over committing, cleaning the house for guests or frantically packing, fueled by nothing more than a plate of sugar cookies. Don’t forget to take a moment to remember how special this time of year is and that you can make it special for someone else by volunteering.
