8 Must Read Books to Grow, Lead and Inspire

ESA was founded as a women's reading group nearly 90 years ago. Though we have grown into a co-ed organization focused on creating good in the world together, our interest in reading continues. We put together a list of eight books that you simply can't miss on the journey to becoming your best self.

  1. How to Win Friends & Influence People  by Dale Carnegie - This one is a classic. There is a reason that it's still widely read despite being published in the 1930's.  If you've swapped book recommendations with Charlotte Carloni, ESA's executive director, you know this is at the top for her.

  2. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change by Stephen R. Covey - Another classic! What can we say, ESA knows the value of an oldie-but-goodie. These first two go hand in hand.

  3. The Art of Self-Promotion: Tell Your Story, Transform Your Career by Debbie Stone - This book is helpful even if you aren't focused on your career. Self promotion makes most of us squirm just thinking about it, but it's an important skill no matter what you want to accomplish.

  4. The Attention Revolution: Unlocking the Power of the Focused Mind by Alan Wallace - The average person's attention span is 8 seconds (and that's everybody, not just millenials). In fact, we're willing to bet you scanned over this entire sentence. We think that this pretty much speaks for itself.

  5. You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero - If you're rolling your eyes at yourself for even clicking on this blog, this is for you.  Jen Sincero is full of inspiration and sass! She breaks the rules and brings new life to the tired self help book tropes.

  6. The Happiness Project (Revised Edition): Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun by Gretchen Rubin - Go along with Gretchen on her year-long journey toward a happier life. You'll come away with a little more happiness for yourself and some left to spread to others.

  7. StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Warren Bennis - Part personality test, part self help. This book will give you presepctive on how you can use your strengths to be more successful in any part of your life.

  8. The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are by Brene Brown - If you've watched her famous Ted Talk on the power of vulnerability, you'll get why we are obesessed with Brene Brown. In this book she helps you to turn your back on the belief that you should be working to fix all of your imperfections. She works to foster the belief that each of us is enough.
